When driving from San Francisco to New York, Jacob went on the road with the LA artist Nicole Fuller. Every time they stopped to fill the tank with gas, Nicole had great anxiety over the fact that the gas station managers often refused to serve them. That was when she explained to Jacob that people out in the middle of America are not too keen on seeing a white man together with a black woman.
